Halloween safety: Preventing injuries during festivities

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) is advising families to take safety precautions to avoid injuries during Halloween festivities. Data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates that between 2020 and 2023, approximately 3,200 Halloween-related injuries were treated in U.S. emergency departments annually, with 55% of those cases linked to pumpkin carving.

To prevent injuries, experts recommend choosing well-fitting costumes that do not drag on the ground and wearing sturdy, slip-resistant footwear. For visibility, families should opt for bright colors, reflective tape, or flashlights, and avoid masks that obstruct vision. Regarding pumpkin carving, adults should handle tools in well-lit areas, while children should use safer alternatives like paint or markers.

Physical comfort can also be maintained through simple stretches. Recommended movements include upper back stretches, lateral neck and shoulder stretches, and squats to strengthen legs for activities like carrying decorations or heavy bags of candy.
