Hallstatt residents protest against mass tourism

Residents of Hallstatt, Austria, are protesting against the intense levels of mass tourism affecting their village. Local inhabitants have displayed banners reading “Wir wohnen hier! – We live here!” to emphasize that the area is a residential community rather than just a tourist destination.

Despite existing regulations, such as mandatory time windows and minimum stay requirements for tour buses carrying visitors from Asia and the Middle East, the influx of tourists remains difficult to manage. On a recent peak afternoon, parking systems were at capacity, and traffic congestion occurred near the village center. Residents have resorted to using red barrier tape to protect their home entrances from the crowds crowding the lakeside promenade.
