Halo: Combat Evolved receives unofficial browser port

Programmer Mitchell Hynes has released an unofficial web browser port of the original 2001 Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved. The project utilizes a recent decompilation of the game to allow it to run directly in a browser without requiring a console or PC installation.

The port includes the full original campaign and split-screen co-op mode. It also features an ambitious online multiplayer mode designed to support up to 128 players, though Hynes noted that this large-scale multiplayer mode is currently “untested” and less stable than the single-player experience.

Controls have been mapped from the original controller layout to mouse and keyboard. While the game runs smoothly on PC, performance is reported to be poor on mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. The project follows in the footsteps of other classic titles that have received similar browser-based conversions.
