Haltern am See residents hold vigil for democracy

Approximately 200 people gathered at the marketplace in Haltern am See on Tuesday evening to hold a vigil following the state election in Saxony-Anhalt. Under the motto ‘Wir bleiben DemokraTisch’ (We remain democratic), participants gathered in front of the Old Town Hall to advocate for democratic values.

Protesters used handmade signs to highlight various causes, including equality, climate protection, compulsory schooling, independent journalism, public broadcasting, education, inclusion, and skilled labor shortages. The event, which included performances by line dancers, was organized jointly by Omas gegen Rechts Haltern am See, the Forum für Demokratie, Respekt und Vielfalt, and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen Haltern am See. Organizers emphasized that democracy requires active civic engagement, diversity, and mutual respect beyond the act of voting.
