Haluk Levent detained as Turkish probe uncovers alleged misuse of Ahbap charity funds

The Istanbul Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı has opened a multi‑year investigation into the Ahbap Derneği, the charitable foundation founded by singer Haluk Levent. Prosecutors have charged Levent with opposition to the Associations Law, money‑laundering and organized‑crime membership after he was taken into custody by police on the Bursa‑İstanbul highway.

The case alleges that roughly 120 million TL was transferred from Ahbap accounts to the personal account of Levent’s assistant, Yeliz Kaya, and that between 2020 and 2026 Levent used accounts linked to the foundation to place legal bets totalling about 990 million TL, losing roughly 390 million TL. A separate complaint claims the foundation’s name was used to acquire about 22 properties worth US$60 million for a promised girls’ dormitory, which were never built and were allegedly transferred to private hands, causing an estimated US$60 million loss.

Investigators also say earthquake relief donations were diverted to personal accounts, that foreign‑exchange bills and securities were used to empty Ahbap’s bank accounts, and that a travel ban was imposed on Levent after he attempted to leave the country. The probe has led to the arrest of 26 suspects, including lawyer Ece Güner, mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s former adviser, and several Ahbap staff members. A police raid on the foundation’s headquarters seized documents, cash, gold and digital records.

The investigation remains ongoing, with further statements expected from the prosecutor’s office.
