Halyomorpha halys: How to manage stink bug infestations

As temperatures drop, Halyomorpha halys—commonly known as the brown marmorated stink bug or Asian stink bug—frequently enters homes seeking warmth. These insects often congregate near windows, doors, and roof structures.

Experts advise against crushing the insects, as doing so or feeling threatened triggers them to release a strong, unpleasant odor. While they do not bite, transmit diseases, or pose a danger to pets and humans, their presence can become a nuisance in large numbers.

Recommended methods for removal include gently transferring them outside using a piece of paper or using a vacuum cleaner equipped with a nylon stocking over the nozzle to capture and relocate them. To prevent future infestations, homeowners are encouraged to seal cracks and use weatherstripping, sealant, or mosquito nets to block entry points.
