Hamadan Bu-Ali Sina University investigates student gastrointestinal illnesses

Medical teams from Hamadan University of Medical Sciences have been deployed to the dining halls and dormitories of Bu-Ali Sina University to investigate a series of gastrointestinal illnesses among students. Approximately 89 students have sought medical treatment so far, with initial reports citing 59 cases followed by an additional 30.

University officials are investigating several potential causes, including the quality of raw food ingredients, cooking processes, storage and distribution conditions, water quality, and potential contamination of utensils. While initial concerns focused on dinner service for dormitory residents, investigations have expanded to include lunch service and non-resident students.

Experts noted that symptoms may not appear simultaneously and can manifest up to 48 hours after exposure. All affected students have reportedly received outpatient treatment, with no hospitalizations reported. Microbiological testing is expected to take three to four days, after which official results will be released.
