Flydubai flight attack: Co-pilot attempts terrorist hijacking to Tel Aviv FAST-MOVING

UAE authorities have officially classified an incident on Flydubai flight FZ1073, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, as an attempted terrorist attack. Investigators revealed that the co-pilot, identified as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, attacked the captain, Smit Machchhar, with an emergency crash axe inside the cockpit in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft.

The assault caused the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to undergo a rapid descent of approximately 16,000 to 17,000 feet. The situation was neutralized after passengers and crew members rushed into the cockpit to subdue al-Hammami. A reserve pilot on board then took control, performing an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia. All 172 to 182 passengers and crew members were reported safe.

Investigations are focusing on how al-Hammami, who was reportedly previously barred from flying by Oman Air due to extremist views, was permitted to work for Flydubai and operate a flight on a high-sensitivity route to Israel. Reports indicate al-Hammami had previously held positions at Oman Air and Royal Air Maroc. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the suspect appeared to have undergone Islamist radicalization. Flydubai has temporarily suspended all flights to and from Tel Aviv pending the outcome of the ongoing multi-national investigation.
