Hamas agrees to Gaza peace roadmap and disarmament path
Hamas has announced its agreement to a 15-point roadmap intended to implement the second phase of a peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. This development marks a significant shift, as the group has officially committed to a path that includes the potential surrender of its weapons and the relinquishment of its role in governance.
The roadmap involves transferring civilian and security administration of the Gaza Strip from Hamas to a Gaza Management Committee, alongside the formation of an international stabilization force (ISF). This ISF, reportedly to be commanded by U.S. Major General Jasper Jeffers, would be tasked with monitoring Hamas compliance, training Palestinian police, securing humanitarian aid, and acting as a buffer between the Israel Defense Forces and a new Gazan government.
Despite the agreement, challenges remain regarding implementation. The transition depends on mutual conditions, including the cessation of Israeli operations and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Gaza Strip. Observers have raised concerns regarding whether Hamas will adhere to the disarmament terms or if the agreement serves as a tactical retreat to rebuild strength.
