Hamas leader expresses no expectations for Israeli elections
Hamas leader Khalil al-Haya stated that the group expects no significant changes for the Palestinian people following the upcoming Israeli elections on October 27. Speaking to Qatar’s Al Araby channel, al-Haya asserted that Palestinians have suffered under all Israeli political parties that have held power.
Al-Haya emphasized that Hamas refuses to allow Palestinian blood and suffering to serve as political fuel for the election cycle. These elections are the first in Israel since the October 7, 2023, attacks, which resulted in 1,221 deaths. The subsequent war in Gaza has caused over 73,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Hamas-run Ministry of Health, figures recognized as reliable by the UN.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a highly contested election and has maintained a commitment to keeping Israeli forces in Gaza. He has also rejected a U.S. peace proposal, questioning Hamas's intent to disarm. Meanwhile, the Palestinian Authority is planning elections for November 28, which would be the first in the territory in 20 years, following the 2006 elections where Hamas defeated Fatah.
