Hamas official commemorates Fathi Shaqaqi anniversary
Husam Badran, a member of the Hamas political bureau, issued a statement marking the 31st anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Fathi Shaqaqi, the founder and former Secretary-General of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
Badran described Shaqaqi as a prominent intellectual and political figure whose vision combined intellectual awareness with national commitment. He emphasized that Shaqaqi’s legacy remains influential in the Palestinian cause, particularly his belief in building conscious individuals as the foundation for strong institutions.
Shaqaqi was assassinated on October 26, 1995, in Sliema, Malta, in an operation attributed to the Israeli Mossad. Born in the Rafah refugee camp in 1951, Shaqaqi studied mathematics at Birzeit University and medicine at Zagazig University in Egypt before engaging in political activism.
