Hamburg alcohol ban improves safety in St. Georg

An alcohol consumption ban near the Hamburg central station and in the St. Georg district is showing positive results in improving public safety, according to local police. The ban, which allows individuals to carry alcoholic beverages but prohibits drinking them in public, has led to fewer people congregating at known hotspots such as the Hansabrunnen and Steindamm.

Mehmet Simsit, the 60-year-old owner of the Hansa-Treff pub, reported that the streets have become quieter and that drinking groups have decreased. Simsit initiated a petition for the ban after being severely injured by a drunk individual with a glass bottle last year, an incident that nearly cost him his eye. He noted that the increased police presence and the restriction on public drinking have significantly reduced the number of people gathering in front of local kiosks.
