Hamburg allocates over €1.5 bn to education and urban projects, including €100 m for Steilshoop

Since 2011 the Hamburg Senate has directed roughly €100 million to the Steilshoop district, with the bulk spent on school infrastructure – the Campus am See school cost €47.6 million and the sports hall €8.5 million – and on integrated urban development projects totalling €23.8 million, alongside upgrades to transport, playgrounds and public spaces.

Overall, Hamburg has received more than €1.4 billion in EU structural funding since 1994. Over €664 million comes from the European Social Fund and the European Regional Development Fund, supporting more than 105 projects in innovation, climate protection, employment, education and social integration. The EU funds have helped over 200 companies reduce CO₂ emissions by 94 000 tonnes and have benefited roughly 333 000 people, especially women, youth and migrants. Senator Melanie Leonhard (SPD) said the EU money is essential for making Hamburg future‑ready and urged the federal government to maintain strong funding levels.
