Hamburg and Asklepios agree on new Altona hospital construction

The City of Hamburg and the Asklepios healthcare group have reached an agreement to construct a new hospital in Altona to replace the aging AK Altona facility. The project is expected to become operational around 2034 or 2035.

The new facility is designed to serve approximately 280,000 people across western Hamburg and the surrounding districts of Pinneberg, Stade, and Harburg. It will function as a maximum care provider, integrating inpatient, outpatient, and semi-residential medicine under one roof. The planned clinic will include 600 beds, featuring 60 intensive care beds and 46 neonatal beds, along with 12 operating rooms for inpatient procedures and five fast-track rooms for outpatient surgery.

Regarding financing, the City of Hamburg will cover 77 percent of the costs, with Asklepios funding the remainder. While the exact total remains undisclosed to protect the European-wide procurement process, officials have indicated the investment will reach several hundred million euros. The Hamburg Senate has already increased its annual reserves for this project to 25 million euros. A final decision on the specific costs and financing will be presented to the city parliament in the third quarter of 2027 following the completion of the tender process.
