German Baltic Coast Seal Deaths Spark Investigation and Public Guidance
Since May, researchers from the German Marine Museum have examined ten dead seals found along the Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern coastline. The environmental ministry reports that the carcasses show a mix of age‑related and disease‑related causes, while four specimens exhibit signs of possible human impact, such as by‑catch. Authorities stress that the findings are preliminary and that there is no basis to blame local fisheries at this stage.
Public safety officials advise beach‑goers to keep at least 300 metres away from any solitary seal, never to touch or move the animal, and to keep dogs away. In the event of a sighting, the appropriate seal‑rescue stations—Friedrichskoog (SH), Norddeich (NI) and Neuwerk (HH)—should be contacted via the listed telephone numbers. Contact with seals can disturb mothers and may spread disease, so expert evaluation is required before any rescue attempt.
