Hamburg art institutions host major modern art exhibitions

Major art institutions in Hamburg are hosting exhibitions focused on the evolution of modern art and the influence of key collectors.

The Hamburger Kunsthalle has introduced a reinterpreted selection from its modern collection titled ‘This is the modern world. Breakthroughs in Art 1900–1960’. The presentation features over 150 works, including paintings, sculptures, and drawings from movements such as Expressionism, the École de Paris, Surrealism, and New Objectivity. The exhibition explores how art responded to societal shifts, including the influence of psychology, philosophy, and Nazi ideology.

Simultaneously, the Bucerius Kunst Forum is hosting ‘From Monet to Picasso: Jewish Art Collectors in Germany’. This exhibition highlights the contributions of Jewish collectors since the turn of the 20th century, showcasing approximately 100 pieces ranging from Impressionism to Expressionism. A central figure highlighted is Rosa Schapire, a pioneering art historian and patron who supported the ‘Die Brücke’ group and helped promote modern art in Germany before being forced into exile in London in 1939.
