Hamburg Bookstore Prize and German Book Prize 2026 Nominees Revealed
A shortlist of seven independent bookstores in Hamburg has been announced for the 2026 Hamburg Bookstore Prize. Three of the nominees—Buchhandlung Blattgold, Buchhandlung Lutz Heimhalt, and Bücherfuchs—will each receive €5,000. The winners will be named on 5 September 2026 at the Literaturhaus Hamburg during the “Long Night of Literature”. Hamburg Culture Senator Carsten Brosda highlighted the role of independent booksellers in fostering literary discourse, and the ceremony is marked by the recent death of longtime bookseller Frank Bartling.
Separately, the German Book Prize 2026 will feature a series of author readings across the country. Fourteen “blind‑date” sessions and three larger literary evenings are scheduled for August‑September, including events in Frankfurt, Berlin and Hamburg. The programme is organized by the Stiftung Buchkultur, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and the Deutsche Bank Stiftung, with live streams and ticket sales managed by the Literaturhaus Hamburg and partner venues.
