Hamburg considers closing three citizen service offices

The city of Hamburg is considering closing three Hamburg Service citizen office locations in Blankenese, Niendorf, and Süderelbe as part of budget-driven austerity measures. Finance and District Senator Andreas Dressel described the potential changes as an “offering change” necessitated by the current budget situation, suggesting that fixed service points could be replaced by mobile teams and increased online services.

The proposal has met resistance from the Verdi union. André Kretschmar, a regional department manager for Verdi Hamburg, criticized the framing of the plan, stating that what the Senator calls “offering changes” are actually “tangible cutting measures with serious consequences” for both citizens and employees. The union has demanded full transparency regarding the plans. District assemblies are expected to be involved in the decision-making process before the autumn holidays.
