Hamburg court begins trial of suspected Nord Stream saboteur

The trial of Serhiy Kusnetzov has commenced at the Higher Regional Court in Hamburg regarding the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines. According to the German Federal Prosecutor's Office, Kusnetzov, a former member of the Ukrainian special forces, is accused of leading a six-person team that used the sailing yacht ‘Andromeda’ to attach explosives to the pipelines near Rügen.

The explosions destroyed three of the four pipelines in the Baltic Sea, causing massive damage to infrastructure valued at approximately 17 billion euros. The pipelines were critical for transporting inexpensive Siberian gas to Germany; Nord Stream 1 had provided roughly half of Germany's natural gas needs prior to the incident, while Nord Stream 2 never became operational.

Kusnetzov has declined to testify. His defense team has criticized the German judicial process, with one lawyer alleging that Italian authorities were misled during extradition proceedings. The defense further argued that the trial is being driven by political and economic interests, characterizing the defendant as a ‘scapegoat’ in a larger geopolitical game.
