Hamburg court to decide on dismissal request in Nord Stream sabotage trial
The Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg is expected to rule next week on a motion to dismiss the legal proceedings against Serhij Kusnjezow, the alleged mastermind behind the Nord Stream pipeline sabotage.
Kusnjezow, a 50-year-old former Ukrainian special forces officer, is accused of orchestrating the explosions that damaged the gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea in late September 2022. He faces charges including war crimes. The defense has contested the war crimes allegations and argued that a fair trial is impossible, noting that Kusnjezow is bound by secrecy as a former officer and cannot disclose details to his lawyers.
If the court rejects the dismissal request, the trial is scheduled to continue on Tuesday, October 27. The court plans to hear testimony from a Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) expert regarding the extent of the damage and the cause of the explosions.
