Hamburg design hotel repurposed as temporary shelter for Ukrainian refugees
The design hotel ‘The Niu Quay’ in Hamburg-Harburg has been repurposed as a temporary shelter for approximately 340 Ukrainian refugees. The transition, which began on September 1, follows the hotel's opening in May.
To manage the shift, the municipal social enterprise ‘Fördern und Wohnen’ has leased the facility, which contains 146 rooms and 20 apartments, from the Novum Hospitality Group. The Hamburg Social Authority stated that the hotel is an interim solution and is not intended for permanent use. The lease is initially set to run until December 2026, with plans to gradually reduce occupancy starting in January 2027 and fully conclude the arrangement by June 2027.
The decision comes as the city faces a capacity crisis; refugee accommodation occupancy is currently at roughly 103 percent. This move is intended to offset the upcoming closure of three large accommodation sites in Harburg—the Fegro-Halle, Schwarzenbergplatz, and Röhricht—which will result in the loss of approximately 1,700 places. The sudden conversion has drawn criticism from local district politicians who claim they were not informed and question the decision to lease a new hotel despite previous city announcements aimed at reducing costly hotel-based accommodations.
