Hamburg Green Party reverses stance on Elbtower museum project

The Hamburg Green Party has reversed its position regarding the planned natural history museum (Naturkundemuseum) in the Elbtower. After previously advocating for the project to be abandoned due to high costs, the faction now intends to wait for the results of ongoing negotiations before making a final decision.

Michael Gwosdz, leader of the Green faction, stated that the party regrets the impression that they were opposing the state treaty. While the Greens remain critical of the €595 million price tag—arguing that such spending is difficult to justify while funding schools and childcare—they will now participate in the negotiation process with coalition partners.

Meanwhile, the Elbtower construction consortium is pushing for the museum to proceed within the Elbtower project. Spokesperson Dieter Becken confirmed that discussions are well advanced and that the consortium is adhering to a fixed global price of €595 million for the completed museum. This comes despite a competing proposal from real estate firm Büll & Liedtke to house the museum in the Stadtkontor for €495 million, a deal the Greens have also criticized as being too expensive.
