Hamburg housing: SAGA rents new units as city pushes for rent protections

In Hamburg, the housing provider SAGA is preparing to rent out the final remaining terraced houses in the Fischbeker Heidbrook residential area. The project consists of 45 high-quality terraced houses containing 90 residential units. Due to the subsidized nature of the development, rents are set at 9.99 euros per square meter, though applicants must hold a housing entitlement certificate (Wohnberechtigungsschein) and meet specific income requirements. The units are designated for households of one, three, or four people.

Separately, political efforts are underway in Hamburg to curb rising costs associated with index-linked rents. The SPD and Green Party are pushing for measures to protect tenants from sharp increases tied to inflation. While the German federal government is working on a law to limit rent hikes when inflation exceeds three percent, Hamburg's governing factions are seeking to prepare local regulations so that stricter protections can be implemented as soon as federal rules take effect.
