Hamburg intelligence reports decline in left-wing extremism
The Hamburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution reports a decline in the visible presence of the left-wing autonomous scene in the city. Torsten Voß, head of the state office, identified the 2017 G20 summit as a major turning point, noting that previous large-scale riots led to internal debates within the movement regarding the effectiveness and ethics of violent tactics.
Voß stated that the Rote Flora cultural center has lost its central influence, serving now for some only as a "glorified, historical symbolic signal" rather than a hub for major current actions. Other factors contributing to the decline include the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the departure or withdrawal of key figures from the active extremist spectrum.
While the scene has become younger and currently shows less readiness for public action and lower frequency in demonstrations, authorities warn that militant actions could become more targeted and dangerous in the future.
