India's IT industry faces disruption from AI automation

India’s $315 billion IT industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation as Artificial Intelligence disrupts traditional outsourcing models. Major service providers, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, and Cognizant, are being forced to shift from legacy “hours worked” billing to performance-based outcome models.

Clients are increasingly using AI to automate tasks, leading them to demand lower prices or to bring previously outsourced functions back in-house. This shift is reducing the competitive advantage once held by large companies with massive employee bases, as automation levels the playing field for smaller, more agile competitors.

Industry experts note a growing sense of desperation among service providers, as the market increasingly favors clients. The rise of AI-driven automation is also contributing to shorter contract durations and increased revenue uncertainty across the sector.
