Hamburg: Man dies during U-Bahn rescue attempt

A 36-year-old man died on Sunday morning at the Trabrennbahn U-Bahn station in Hamburg after attempting to rescue another person. According to police reports, a group of at least three men was waiting for the U1 line when one individual suddenly jumped into the track bed just before a train arrived.

A second man, aged 36, attempted to hold onto the first individual to prevent the fall, but in the process, he fell onto the tracks and was struck by the incoming train. He died at the scene. The individual who initially jumped into the tracks managed to reach the opposite side of the tracks and subsequently fled the station with companions.

Following an extensive police search, officers encountered three men. Authorities are investigating a 38-year-old Algerian national on suspicion of dangerous interference with rail traffic, as he is believed to be the person who jumped in front of the train. Investigators are also looking into reports that those involved may have been under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants at the time of the incident. The German Red Cross provided psychosocial support to witnesses at the scene.
