Hamburg police investigate sophisticated rental fraud scheme
Police in Hamburg have launched an investigation into a sophisticated rental fraud scheme after approximately 30 people arrived for an apartment viewing that turned out to be fraudulent. The scammers utilized a highly convincing tactic by using real photographs, a legitimate company address, and a professional website with an imprint to build trust.
The apartment owner was reportedly unaware that any viewings were being conducted at her property. The incident was discovered when a journalist specializing in fraud prevention attended the viewing and alerted authorities. Police arrived at the scene, interrupted the viewing, and began collecting witness statements.
Authorities warn that scammers often exploit the high demand and low supply in major German cities by impersonating real estate agencies or building managers. Common tactics include requesting sensitive personal information, such as SCHUFA reports and ID copies, or demanding advance payments for deposits and keys under the guise of being located abroad.
