Hamburg Police to dissolve mounted unit and helicopters by 2027

The Hamburg Police have announced plans to dissolve their mounted police unit by the end of 2027. The decision is driven by both financial and personnel considerations, with the move expected to save approximately 1.1 million euros.

Police President Falk Schnabel stated that resources from the unit will be redirected toward other essential tasks, such as drone defense. The timing of the dissolution coincides with the expiration of the lease for the police stables in Pinneberg. Additionally, the department plans to phase out its two helicopters, which are over 20 years old, and replace them with a drone strategy involving drones stationed on selected station roofs.

While the mounted unit and helicopters are being cut, the police orchestra will remain active. The orchestra consists of 35 professional musicians and costs the taxpayer approximately two million euros annually.
