Hamburg politicians propose ban on artificial EV engine noise

Political factions SPD and Grünen in Hamburg have introduced an initiative to restrict artificial electric vehicle (EV) noise. The proposal targets non-functional sounds designed solely for driving experience rather than safety.

The initiative aims to address noise that serves no purpose other than aesthetic or emotional appeal. Crucially, the mandatory Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), which provides low-speed warning sounds for pedestrians and cyclists, would remain unaffected to ensure road safety.

The exact scope of the proposed ban is currently undetermined, leaving uncertainty regarding which specific sounds might be prohibited. It is unclear whether the restriction would apply to external sounds or if artificial engine noises played through internal cabin speakers would be permitted.
