Hamburg Pride draws record 300,000 participants after Berlin CSD attack FAST-MOVING
On 25 July 2026 a 21‑year‑old Islamist drove a van into crowds at the Christopher Street Day (CSD) celebration in Berlin’s Tiergarten, then attacked people with a machete. One Polish woman was killed and 31 others were injured, seven seriously. Police shot the attacker dead the following day.
A week later, Hamburg hosted its annual Pride parade. Police deployed roughly twice the usual number of officers and installed additional barriers. Organisers and police reported a record turnout of about 300 000 people, far exceeding the previous year’s 260 000. The event featured politicians such as Green MP Ricarda Lang, SPD deputy‑chair Matthias Miersch and Hamburg’s deputy mayor Katharina Fegebank, as well as drag‑queen Olivia Jones.
In the political aftermath, Union parliamentary leader Thorsten Frei said the interior minister Alexander Dobrindt and justice minister Stefanie Hubig will present stricter security legislation within weeks, likely in August. Proposed measures include the expanded use of electronic ankle‑bracelets and a nationwide preventive‑detention framework for “Gefährder”.
The federal victims’ commissioner announced immediate financial assistance of €3 000‑€5 000 per victim, with further support to follow.
