Hamburg proposes Ukrainian as an Abitur exam subject

The SPD and Green Party governing factions in Hamburg have submitted a joint motion to allow Ukrainian to be offered as an official examination subject for the Abitur. While Ukrainian is currently taught at nine schools in Hamburg through 19 different courses, students have not been able to select it for their final high school graduation exams.

Proponents of the motion argue that the move would provide recognition for the high level of language proficiency among many students and ensure equal educational opportunities compared to other heritage languages like Arabic, Farsi, Russian, or Turkish that are already established as exam subjects. Currently, approximately 5,550 Ukrainian-speaking children and adolescents attend schools in the city.

The Hamburg Parliament (Bürgerschaft) is scheduled to decide on the motion on October 14. If approved, the Senate will be tasked with creating the necessary legal frameworks and curriculum plans. The city also intends to advocate at the federal level for the recognition of the subject, provided there is a sufficient supply of qualified teachers.
