Hamburg railway projects face uncertainty amid new federal infra-plan

Major railway infrastructure projects in Hamburg face uncertainty following the release of the federal “Infraplan 2026”. While Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger aims to increase rail reliability and performance by 2030, specific plans for Hamburg remain vague or subject to conditions.

The expansion of the S4 line, intended to run between Altona and Rahlstedt, has stalled due to the postponement of the general renovation of the Hamburg–Lübeck line. Although the Infraplan mentions the eastern section from Hasselbrook to Ahrensburg with a potential completion in 2029, this remains conditional.

Simultaneously, the redevelopment of Altona Station has drawn criticism from the SPD parliamentary group. As Deutsche Bahn moves long-distance and regional services to the Diebsteich site, officials are demanding a binding timetable. Concerns have been raised regarding the necessity of interim structures and the lack of transparency surrounding the Connection Rail Relief Tunnel (VET), which may delay the completion of the final station building beyond 2029.
