Hamburg reports decline in bicycle and vehicle traffic

Traffic volumes in Hamburg saw a decline during the first half of 2026, according to data from the city's mobility monitor. The most significant drop occurred in bicycle traffic, which fell by six percent compared to the same period the previous year.

Automobile traffic also decreased by two percent. Meanwhile, the Hamburg Transport Association (HVV) reported a 1.2 percent decline in passenger numbers, totaling 541.1 million travelers. The HVV attributed this dip partly to strikes conducted by the Verdi union during the late winter.

Meteorological data suggests extreme weather may have contributed to the decline in cycling. The first half of 2026 saw an increase in rainy and snowy days, rising from 66 to 89 days, and a significant increase in total precipitation from 171 mm to 265 mm. Additionally, temperature extremes were more pronounced, ranging from -13 to +39 degrees Celsius.
