Hamburg security checks for public service applicants yield five hits

Since the implementation of mandatory security checks for public service applicants in Hamburg on August 1, 2026, more than 4,000 inquiries have been submitted to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. According to a response from the Hamburg Senate to a parliamentary inquiry, 4,049 inquiries were made in the first month alone.

Of these, five cases involved existing information regarding job candidates. Two cases have yielded specific findings: one involving Islamism and another involving left-wing extremism. Three additional cases are currently being processed. These cases span various departments, including the authorities for schools, finance, and economy. No final decisions regarding employment or civil servant status have been made in any of these five instances.

The measure has faced criticism from the Left Party (Die Linke), which noted that approximately 60 percent of the checks pertain to applicants for schools and universities. Critics, including unions such as Verdi and GEW, have expressed concerns that the policy subjects applicants to a state of general suspicion and noted constitutional concerns regarding non-specific inquiries.
