Hamburg tenants receive temporary housing after emergency building demolition

Following the emergency evacuation of an apartment building on Holstenstraße in Hamburg-Altona due to imminent collapse risk, demolition of the rear building has commenced. The evacuation, ordered by authorities in late July, forced eleven tenants to flee with only minutes to gather essential items, leaving behind furniture and personal belongings. Residents reported that cracks in the 1894-built structure had been reported to the landlord and the district office weeks prior to the emergency intervention.

While tenants have been searching through rubble for lost possessions, the Altona District Office has coordinated with the Spar- und Bauverein Altoba to provide temporary housing. The displaced residents are scheduled to move into a nearby vacant building on Chemnitzstraße during September. This arrangement is intended to last for up to two years, though the long-term housing situation for the community remains uncertain.
