Hamburg to host German Protestant Church Congress in 2029

The German Protestant Church Congress (Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag) is scheduled to take place in Hamburg from May 30 to June 3, 2029. This marks the fifth time the city has hosted the large-scale religious and cultural event, following previous occurrences in 1953, 1981, 1995, and 2013.

The 2029 event coincides with the 500th anniversary of the adoption of the city and church order by Johannes Bugenhagen. Kirsten Fehrs, the EKD Council Chair and Bishop of Hamburg, described the congresses as “living, hopeful, and inspiring festivals of faith.” Hamburg's First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher, noted the city is a suitable venue for the debates, events, and international guests associated with the gathering.
