Hamburg to install 400 new bus shelters under renewed advertising deal

The city of Hamburg has renewed its advertising contracts for public transport infrastructure, leading to the planned installation of 400 new bus shelters. The agreement with advertising firms Ströer and JCDecaux aims to improve passenger comfort and safety by providing barrier-free shelters equipped with age-appropriate seating, including armrests and backrests.

Environmental and social features are integrated into the new deal. The plan includes 100 additional shelters with green roofs to support local flora and fauna, as well as bird-protection markings on the glass of all 400 new structures. To manage digital expansion, new digital displays will only be permitted if analog ones are removed at a ratio of 1:1.5, potentially resulting in the removal of up to 170 analog units.

The contract also mandates a quota for displaying cultural and municipal advertisements on digital screens. Hamburg expects to maintain stable annual revenues of approximately 30 million euros from these advertising rights.
