Hamburg U1 subway line reopens after infrastructure upgrades

The Hochbahn has successfully completed the central construction phase of the ‘Ohlsdorf 2026’ project, resulting in the reopening of the Hamburg U1 subway line between Fuhlsbüttel Nord and Lattenkamp. Following a 13-week closure, regular service in both directions is scheduled to resume on Thursday, October 15.

The infrastructure modernization involved an investment of approximately 23 million euros. Key works included the complete demolition and reconstruction of the century-old platform at Ohlsdorf station, including 263 meters of new platform edges. Additionally, a 45-meter-long subway bridge over Alsterdorfer Straße was replaced using 270 tons of steel and 350 cubic meters of concrete.

Extensive track work was also conducted along the route, including the replacement of 1,400 meters of rails and 1,400 sleepers, the installation of 900 meters of new power rails, and the exchange of 700 cubic meters of ballast. The project also saw the installation of two new switches and the renovation of the ‘Alster’ subway bridge. Due to the efficient progress of the works, a previously planned service restriction—where trains would have bypassed Ohlsdorf station toward the city center between October 15 and 28—has been canceled.
