Hamburg U5 subway project remains on track for 2040 completion

Jens-Günter Lang, a spokesperson for Hochbahn, maintains that the completion of Hamburg’s U5 subway line by 2040 remains a realistic goal. This assessment comes despite delays in the planning approval process for the project’s second construction phase, which covers the City Nord-Jarrestraße section.

Hochbahn now expects the planning approval decision for this second phase to arrive in the third quarter of 2027, a delay from the original 2026 estimate. Following the subsequent tender process, construction is projected to commence in late 2027 or early 2028. Lang noted that because the various construction phases are independent, the company has the flexibility to adjust sequences or accelerate certain works to mitigate delays.

The U5 project is a major infrastructure undertaking designed to connect the eastern and western parts of Hamburg. Additionally, Hochbahn is exploring extensions for the U4 line, including a potential route toward Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg.
