Hamburg's New Stern Bridge Faces Public Criticism Over Design

Hamburg's newly built Stern Bridge, a 108‑metre long and roughly 20‑metre high steel structure replacing a deteriorated 1926 bridge, has sparked strong public reaction. A t‑online poll of 1,634 readers found that 56 % described the bridge as "terrible" or a "monster bridge," while only about 36 % expressed a positive view.

Residents and local clubs also voiced concerns beyond aesthetics. The construction required the removal of buildings and trees, and displaced music venues such as Fundbureau and Beat Boutique, which have since been relocated to the Deichtorhallen with city support. The district and cultural authorities are consulting with residents and cultural workers about the surrounding area’s future.

Deutsche Bahn argues the project was unavoidable, noting that the old bridge was worn out and that the new link will allow roughly 1,000 trains per day to run again from the end of August, improving the reliability of the rail network.
