Hamburg's New Sternbrücke Bridge Transport Completed

A 3,700‑ton steel railway bridge, known as the Sternbrücke, was moved through Hamburg's Altona district using a specially designed transport platform with 1,088 wheels. The night‑time operation covered roughly 500 metres at a maximum speed of one kilometre per hour, threading the massive structure between the Max‑Brauer‑Allee and Stresemannstraße with only centimetre‑wide clearances.

The bridge was lifted into its permanent position over the Stresemannstraße, completing a key phase of the rail link upgrade between Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Altona. Deutsche Bahn officials highlighted the project as a technical milestone that will increase capacity and reliability for commuters. Local officials, including Senator Anjes Tjarks and DB InfraGO board member Gerd‑Dietrich Bolte, praised the cooperation with residents and the anticipated improvements for rail, bus, bicycle and pedestrian traffic.
