German police conduct widespread traffic enforcement and speed checks

Police departments across various German regions conducted extensive traffic enforcement operations during early August 2026, focusing on speeding, substance abuse, and distracted driving.

As part of the European-wide ROADPOL and Speedweek initiatives, authorities in Hagen, Recklinghausen, and Offenburg reported significant numbers of speeding violations. In Recklinghausen and Hagen, approximately one in four drivers exceeded speed limits. In Offenburg, over 9,000 motorists were cited, with mobile measurement trailers accounting for nearly 90 percent of infractions. Specific incidents included a motorcyclist in Lippe clocked at 120 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.

In addition to speed enforcement, police in Hameln, Bad Münder, and Bad Pyrmont identified numerous violations involving alcohol and drug impairment, driving without a valid license, and operating uninsured vehicles. In Rheinland-Pfalz, the ADAC Mittelrhein highlighted the dangers of mobile phone use, noting that reading or writing text messages increases accident risks sixfold.

Other safety initiatives included weight checks for caravans and motorhomes in Borken to prevent overloading and promote cargo security.
