Hamid Ansari sparks controversy over remarks on Hindu communalism

Former Vice President Hamid Ansari has sparked significant political controversy following remarks made during the third A. G. Noorani Memorial Lecture in New Delhi. While discussing the shift from civic to cultural nationalism, Ansari cited an observation attributed to former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, stating, “The danger to India, mark you, it is not communism; it is Hindu right-wing communalism.” He argued that such trends could lead to a distinction among citizens based on faith.

These comments drew sharp condemnation from various political and religious groups. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) described the remarks as an insult to India's traditions. VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal criticized Ansari’s past conduct, suggesting his rhetoric aims to create fear among the Muslim community. Similarly, BJP leader Karunasagar labeled the remarks “shameful,” arguing that Ansari was being selective by not condemning left-wing or Islamic extremism with the same vigor.

In response to the backlash, some leaders have called for Ansari to retract his statements, while others, such as the All India Imam Association, have noted that Muslims should not feel like outsiders in the country.
