Hamirpur: Accused in child rape and murder shot in police encounter

A 30-year-old man, identified as Hiralal, was shot in the legs during a police encounter in the Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred while police were escorting the suspect to a crime scene for evidence collection following the alleged rape and murder of a three-year-old girl.

According to police, the victim was playing outside her home in the Muskara police station area on Sunday afternoon when the suspect allegedly lured her to a nearby field. The child was reportedly raped and strangled to death using her own clothing. The suspect allegedly joined the family in their search for the child before being identified and apprehended.

The discovery of the body triggered significant unrest in the village. Angry residents, accusing the police of negligence, reportedly pelted stones at law enforcement vehicles. Six vehicles, including those belonging to the circle officer and station house officers from Rath and Binwar, were damaged during the commotion. Police used minimal force to disperse the crowd and secure the body for a post-mortem examination. A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
