GEW NRW advocates for nationwide uniform school holidays

Ayla Celik, the North Rhine-Westphalia state leader of the education union GEW, is advocating for a serious evaluation of nationwide uniform summer holidays in Germany.

Celik suggests that even if full synchronization is not feasible, there should be a move toward greater unification within the existing holiday corridors. She argues that a more synchronized school year would allow for better coordination of central examinations and provide more stability for families during school transfers between federal states.

The proposal comes amidst ongoing debates regarding the distribution of holiday dates among federal states, particularly as some regions seek to end the special status of states like Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, which traditionally hold holidays at the end of the summer period.
