Hammersmith Bridge funding bid sparks dispute between London councils

A political dispute has intensified between Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Wandsworth Council regarding a £128 million funding bid for Hammersmith Bridge. The bid, submitted to the Department for Transport’s £1 billion Structures Fund, aims to secure essential repairs to keep the Grade II* listed bridge open to pedestrians, cyclists, and river traffic.

Wandsworth Council, led by Robert Morritt, has rejected the proposal, arguing that it falls short of public expectations by failing to include plans to reinstate full vehicle access. Morritt expressed disappointment with the bid, suggesting it does not meet the needs of residents and businesses. In response, Hammersmith & Fulham councillor Nicole Trehy accused Wandsworth of “playing political games” and noted that the objection arrived after the submission deadline.

Hammersmith & Fulham officials previously noted that a full restoration of the bridge would essentially require building a new structure, which is currently not financially viable. The Department for Transport had recommended a “phased repair” approach due to funding criteria and completion deadlines. Tensions remain high as both councils trade blame over communication failures and the historical sharing of repair costs.
