New Forest wildfire threatens rare species after vehicle fire

A major wildfire is burning through internationally protected heathland in the New Forest National Park, Hampshire. The blaze began on Sunday afternoon after a vehicle caught fire on the A31 near Ringwood, quickly spreading from the central reservation into the surrounding countryside.

More than 120 firefighters are currently battling the fire in challenging rural terrain. The New Forest National Park Authority described the impact as “devastating,” noting that the affected lowland heathland is globally rarer than rainforests and serves as a critical habitat for rare species, including all six of the UK’s native reptiles, Dartford warblers, and nightjars. Experts warn that ecological recovery could take decades.

The A31 remains closed in both directions near the incident site. Smoke from the blaze has been visible for miles, even crossing the Solent to the Isle of Wight, prompting authorities to advise residents to keep windows and doors closed. Firefighters are using drones to monitor the spread of the fire, which has affected an area of approximately one square kilometer.
