Hamtramck City Council members face election fraud charges

Five of the six Muslim members of the Hamtramck, Michigan, City Council are currently under investigation or have been charged with various counts of election fraud.

According to state and local records, the allegations include conspiracies to forge the signatures of recently naturalized immigrants on absentee ballots or to purchase votes. This follows a request from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel for a special prosecutor regarding allegations of conspiracy to commit fraud during the 2023 city council election. Councilman Mohammed Hassan, who also serves as mayor pro tem, was recently convicted by a jury.
