Hamtramck mayoral election results flip after ballot recount
A recount of the 2025 Hamtramck mayoral election in Michigan has shifted the results, potentially overturning the victory of the current mayor, Adam Alharbi. Following a legal battle, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers tabulated 37 absentee ballots that were previously excluded from the initial count.
The updated totals show Muhith Mahmood leading Alharbi by 12 votes, with Mahmood receiving 2,089 votes to Alharbi’s 2,077. Mahmood, a former councilmember, has declared victory, framing the outcome as a win for democracy and voter rights.
However, the results have not yet been certified. Alharbi has filed a lawsuit in Wayne County Circuit Court challenging Mahmood’s eligibility, alleging that Mahmood does not meet the city’s residency requirements and instead lives in Troy. Additionally, Alharbi has raised concerns regarding the integrity of the newly discovered ballots. A judge has barred the board from certifying the results until a hearing on the residency matter is conducted, which is scheduled for October 22.
