Hamzah Batik Malioboro caught in major fire in Yogyakarta

A major fire broke out at the iconic Hamzah Batik souvenir and batik center in the Malioboro tourist district of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in the early hours of Monday, September 28, 2026.

The blaze reportedly began around 01:30 WIB. Witnesses stated that the fire likely originated in a third-floor kitchen area while individuals were performing bathroom repairs on that level. Witnesses reported hearing loud popping sounds before discovering the flames. Although security personnel attempted to use portable fire extinguishers (APAR), the fire spread rapidly through the building.

Emergency response efforts involved 12 fire engines, a water cannon from the Yogyakarta Police (Polresta Jogja), and a fire truck from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI). The fire was successfully extinguished by approximately 04:45 WIB, followed by a cooling process to prevent reignition. No casualties were reported, and the total financial loss is still being assessed.
